The Second Day is much like the first...

The second day is much like the first because your Monday classes are not the same as your Tuesday classes.

Tuesday I have Medical Microbiology 1 (MMBio 353) at 9 am. I saw a lot of my friends from the chemistry classes last semester. I was excited to see them.

Then I had Intro to Organic Chemistry (Chem). We learned some Ochem last year, and I was surprised that I understood most of what the professor was talking about.

Then I have a one hr. break that is reserved for BYU devotionals, or a one hr. speech on various topics and from various people, some professors, poets, or general authority. BUT today we did not have one so I went to eat lunch with some friends at the Cougar Eat; a mall food court type of place. I spent about 45 min waiting in line and about 2 min eating.

I had to run to my Molecular Biology (BIO) class. That is the last time I eat there. I figured it will be much faster to go home (a cross the street) to eat a sandwich. The Bio class was filled with the same people that took Bio 220 in the winter with the exception of a few RMs (returned missionaries). Only at BYU do they treat the status of having returned from a church mission as a title.

I have a free hr. after Bio and before my next class to blow off, which will turn into me trying to do the home work before class. I get a sort of rush like athletes do from trying desperately to finish home work on time. But today I had to walk off campus (which I rarely do) to buy the Biology packet that contains 40 to 50 pages that I’ll never read for that class ($6.75).

And finally, I got to my Intro to Clinical Lab Techniques class (MMBio 102). I was so excited because in this class we get to do some of the tests that I would have to do if I work in a hospital lab, which includes all sorts of blood tests and a rumored pee test. I was so excited that I just could not keep my mouth shut! Usually I never talk in class because it’s a whole different ball game but in this class I was asking questions left and right.

After classes I had to buy my books. I could not put it off any longer so I hunted them down in the book store and raced to the back of the line, which was coiled through out the entire top floor of the book store, and slowly inched my way to the cash register briefing my self with every step for what was to come. Once there, I had just enough strength in me to slowly raise the books to the counter and wait for the cahier to ring me up. Total $256.63 and I still need more books that they ran out of…..

First Day of Class

Today was my first day of class at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah. This is my second year here so I kind of know the ropes. By the way my name is Ana. I graduated from Sunset in 2003. I had a lot of the same teachers you have or will have. I grew up in Oak Cliff just like most of you and now here I am as living proof that a little hard work can take you anywhere you want to go. From the beginning I knew that I wanted to go to college, I just did not know where. But through much prayers and careful consideration I decided that BYU was best for me. Last year was fun, extremely hard, but fun and now I want to share this year with you.

So I am trying to major in Clinical Lab Science and in Spanish Translation, which means a lot of biology, chemistry, micro biology and Spanish classes. You know mayors are a funny thing… at first you don’t have one, then you have about three or four of them and you can not make up your mind, then you change them like you change your socks and finally after taking lots of classes you did not need, you make up you mind and hope that after a couple years of working in the real world you still like it. But for now they are great conversation starters. Guys use them to impress the pretty girls; girls use them to sound sophisticated and so on, but I a happy with my decision so far.

Today I woke up late!!! Last night I set the alarm for 7:30, but I forgot to turn on the “ON” button, so this morning I was dreaming about missing my first day of school because I woke up late when I woke up and it was 8:35. I hurried out of bed got ready in less then 20 minutes and was out the door. Luckily, I live in the dorms right across the street from campus and was in class before the teacher.

During my two hour break I ran back home so I could have breakfast, a cream cheese and ham on toast sandwich, and then get back to campus for my next class. My last class for the day which is supposed to be three hours long ended after the teachers finished explain what the class was about and we got to leave, hurray!! Since I had a few unexpected free hours I found myself in a sea of mad chaos trying to buy my books at the book store and found that I could only afford one ($44).

So until next time, this is one exhausted college student signing off.
